School Counseling

Elementary School Counselors help students learn the skills and attitudes necessary to be successful learners and citizens. We emphasize with students that the classroom is their first workplace. Developing skills in communication, decision-making, interpersonal relationships, and career awareness are all important in life as well as important in a counseling relationship. Information shared with your school counselor will be taken in confidence.

Small groups are organized to help students meet certain challenges they may be facing. These groups give student’s an opportunity to share and acquire specific skills in a confidential setting. They usually meet once a week in groups of three to seven students. The duration of the group can last from four to eight weeks.

Examples of small groups:

1. friendship groups to help children build social skills
2. anger management groups to help students learn how to deal with anger
3. grief groups to help children cope with the death of a loved
4. changing families to help children adjust to the challenges of divorce, remarriage and step-families

We teach Life Skills, our classroom curriculum, as a part of the specials rotation. 

Main Topics Addressed:

character lessons, self-awareness, school and study success skills, feelings, safety, healthy choices/ peer pressure, decision making, communication skills and friendship, conflict resolution, goal setting, and manners

PBIS refers to a school-wide model of positive support for behavior. The goal of this school-wide plan is to teach students actions and words (following our Kenrose School Rules) showing respect for themselves and others as a part of our caring school community. Positive reinforcement will be provided in the form of verbal praise and tweet points utilizing an online system when students are demonstrating expected or extraordinary behaviors. Students will be recognized for their positive behavior in a variety of ways.
